Alfie Dan’s Market Garden, Brecon

Overview

Alfie Dan’s is a 1-acre market garden near Brecon and we grow fruit, flowers and vegetables for local people: from our field to your fork.

I’m Marie and I run the garden with my partner. My Grandad was a keen allotment grower. The housing estate where he lived had a lovely growing space and he had three full-rod allotments. That’s about the area of three full-size doubles tennis courts, and it’s where I got the growing bug. But it wasn’t until quite recently that I was able to set up my own market garden.

Our name is a tribute to my Grandad – and also because I wanted something a little bit different. Most people knew my Grandad as Alf, but mum and Grandma called him Alfie when they were teasing him or wanted something doing. Or Alfred when he was being naughty!

The Dan part of the name comes from when me and my sister were little. We couldn’t say grandad, so we called him “Dan” and that stuck. So now our garden is known as “Alfie Dan’s”.
